QLM Background

QLM is the name chosen for the resources division. It is derived from the Arabic word qalam meaning pen. Allah says:

Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous Who has taught (the writing) by the pen He has taught man that which he knew not. (96:3-5)

The pen is literally and symbolically relevant to the aims and objectives of the distribution of essential knowledge in the classroom, which is the foundation of this establishment.

QLM Background

The development of QLM came from a sincere concern for Muslim students’ educational experiences. A group of teachers realised that Muslim students are in need of the tools to interpret and engage with the curriculum in all Key Learning Areas. There is a disconnection between the spiritual, intellectual and cultural needs of Muslim students and the language taught by the curriculum that needs to be bridged.

Muslim students need to feel that their education is a part of their lives and connected to their beliefs, values and ways of knowing. They also need to learn how to engage with the curriculum, bringing their cultural, ethical and moral values into the classroom with confidence. This will in effect add value to their learning and develop a sense of worth to their education, beyond the classroom.

The QLM team believes that once the Muslim student learns how to interact and have confidence in their identity and beliefs then they will be able to positively and confidently engage and interact with their surrounding environment. In this sense, such curriculum development will result in students being well informed, educated and proactive members of society.
